On September 17, 2004 many communities in the Pittsburgh area were devastated by
floods caused by the remnant of Hurricane Ivan. A record rainfall of 5.95 inches in a
24 hour period caused widespread flood damage particularly in the Greater Chartiers
Valley area. Within a few days the religious leaders of the Carnegie Area Ministerial
Association started working together to aid the homeowners in the area with the long
road to their flood recovery. They invited citizens and community leaders in the area
to join them. By December the Greater Chartiers Valley Long Term Recovery Team
was formed. In a little over two years the team raised $250,000 from donations,
grants, fundraisers, in-kind donations as well as accumulating over 6,000 hours of
volunteer services. The monies were used to purchase materials to repair the homes of
over 200 residents in the area.
Not long into the flood recovery our team saw the need for ongoing community
outreach in our area beyond flood recovery. During the final phase of the recovery,
we began our transition into the Greater Chartiers Valley Community Outreach.
We continue to work aiding the citizens of our communities with home repairs and
displaced families with furniture and household items. Our mission is to insure safe
and decent housing for our residents as well as assisting in a multi-community disaster
response plan.
Our office is located in St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Carnegie, PA. For
information or to learn more about our history with the flood recovery and our plans

and grants to obtain our vision in the future.
